Our first baby was due at the end of July (and of course the old house had sold) so we needed to GET MOVED IN!<br /><br />We continued to take pictures of the work on the house. Just haven't kept up on posting...<br /><br />We're going to do our best to get caught up here if we can. The progress of each step may get abbreviated a little to get it all in...<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">So here goes:</span><br />As we got closer to the closing date of our old house we had to really move fast to get done (enough to move in at least!)<br /><br />When we figured out that the wood floor in the dining room and living room was beyond repair we decided to replace it with a similar look. We decided to go with a quarter sawed White Oak to kind of stay with the period and match the kitchen cabinets. A few buddies, beer and a dumpster got the old floor pulled down to the sub floor. It was hard knowing that we were tearing out hundred year old Siberian oak... but one wiff of the 'pet stains' and we remembered why!<br /><br />I screwed down the entire sub floor (ship lap on the diagonal) to make it tighter and reduce creaky spots. The sub floor doorways to the outside needed to be replaced along with a few broken spots.<br /><br />I took a class as a refresher on how to install hardwood flooring and rented all the equipment to do it.<br /><br />Here is Liesl laying out boards of the new flooring. Yes 7 months pregnant! (What a trooper!)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8sKIvWrZ8_YL7lsbbj-j5miCaFoi-PSU_nmhIaiPtQElohubk1BR9x0yVo44aAITk5w2awfoymTKmrzRtMGo1Zg1ffNcnq4D2iBByvk0cyzBkiON_D09CxoeiEShA5uxnZDW1PsRMAnP/s1600-h/CIMG0493.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif8sKIvWrZ8_YL7lsbbj-j5miCaFoi-PSU_nmhIaiPtQElohubk1BR9x0yVo44aAITk5w2awfoymTKmrzRtMGo1Zg1ffNcnq4D2iBByvk0cyzBkiON_D09CxoeiEShA5uxnZDW1PsRMAnP/s320/CIMG0493.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359829673482513986" border="0" /></a>Installing around the fireplace.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdHa0feV2z6nvwQ4uLYTGK_tg0PADrDE_HsWWF6KcGLxPSA4sA2KD_nrxX-TRlgQmTmz1p5OpXU-5fwKC7RF1FKE-fao42hodKYsMYHJhxlZWTfFPfTbvioo6CjZjK5r6tv33HgoE1fnQ5/s1600-h/CIMG0484.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdHa0feV2z6nvwQ4uLYTGK_tg0PADrDE_HsWWF6KcGLxPSA4sA2KD_nrxX-TRlgQmTmz1p5OpXU-5fwKC7RF1FKE-fao42hodKYsMYHJhxlZWTfFPfTbvioo6CjZjK5r6tv33HgoE1fnQ5/s320/CIMG0484.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359829669241418946" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Nice straight boards!<br /><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5o0lDHu2UcZkpl9wPKLxgUP9RXNBWHuNL2KFjRROfSoaVDNMT6p0l2iHmoJP-V6dR2F_YvPLKdFUo-JpXJVId5rDNlADhKdsUjWdFbMPLP8ryCj-jGA-gIBukWPsBLRcy5532ZoajELBh/s1600-h/CIMG0502.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5o0lDHu2UcZkpl9wPKLxgUP9RXNBWHuNL2KFjRROfSoaVDNMT6p0l2iHmoJP-V6dR2F_YvPLKdFUo-JpXJVId5rDNlADhKdsUjWdFbMPLP8ryCj-jGA-gIBukWPsBLRcy5532ZoajELBh/s320/CIMG0502.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359829675275268866" border="0" /></a>Piece of cake...<br />;)Casey and Liesl Deckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01336734816762915580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498153830027023721.post-22503520477014326872009-03-03T22:38:00.000-08:002009-03-03T22:58:30.540-08:00Deck Ducts and fresh paint<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLuxTaPk6IRQGWMyLcJ9j8d4FPT_3uz0Kj82Rg3vCE9KF5t39-S-n4YgRTpzXYyJevXq1vUJywN5pNW8MSko8SX-L6G0rP5fd1kaj1LoTA23yUz4a8UDIpGb-e-FTUMdMLrtR2kYm9MYVh/s1600-h/Stairs+down.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLuxTaPk6IRQGWMyLcJ9j8d4FPT_3uz0Kj82Rg3vCE9KF5t39-S-n4YgRTpzXYyJevXq1vUJywN5pNW8MSko8SX-L6G0rP5fd1kaj1LoTA23yUz4a8UDIpGb-e-FTUMdMLrtR2kYm9MYVh/s320/Stairs+down.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309219697970032994" border="0" /></a>Remember this one? My dad and I built the new beam and put it up with the help of a rather large sledge hammer.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5IFhr15-96ratKHJYkOzuOO6pmss1k3qa5UuYzDtg6WlUTSftUm-w7LBcJqspQR2ORRmWzRPdSfnlpbu89M81baD4dDebdrENSAmHLaMb68XV37qS8e9qiVoRhZh_TXHak4KUoC6qvO3p/s1600-h/big+new+beam.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5IFhr15-96ratKHJYkOzuOO6pmss1k3qa5UuYzDtg6WlUTSftUm-w7LBcJqspQR2ORRmWzRPdSfnlpbu89M81baD4dDebdrENSAmHLaMb68XV37qS8e9qiVoRhZh_TXHak4KUoC6qvO3p/s320/big+new+beam.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298823682101284306" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib16QIyAbRs41W2EeTIpnHi7ipXKpHIsa4bv_49ZOKCG5PXdtWNS4YNqyVPP1xJdAMjO-gLkfT9y1x1q3I-1SR4DXzcgVJus0idzk2wl6R3iii2IPFb5OoHyDg6JSHQU6dz3YXvZzcGbLX/s1600-h/They+say+this+will+work.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib16QIyAbRs41W2EeTIpnHi7ipXKpHIsa4bv_49ZOKCG5PXdtWNS4YNqyVPP1xJdAMjO-gLkfT9y1x1q3I-1SR4DXzcgVJus0idzk2wl6R3iii2IPFb5OoHyDg6JSHQU6dz3YXvZzcGbLX/s320/They+say+this+will+work.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298823391153352178" border="0" /></a>New beam up, but still waiting to take down the temp walls<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtPsbMaERz2p_rxPmVDtqqvF3-Gx-twy4V18uKIDYSca8r8cb2IU5SM_R9LAk4A2XhpJDpOS9-qNcoyPA3p3DMcPddZHN0doj8xjCz4t-8Okxe4nbFMUZPsNrI0pFCf_nV37O3NY-7yVRN/s1600-h/Dad+taking+down+temp+wall.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtPsbMaERz2p_rxPmVDtqqvF3-Gx-twy4V18uKIDYSca8r8cb2IU5SM_R9LAk4A2XhpJDpOS9-qNcoyPA3p3DMcPddZHN0doj8xjCz4t-8Okxe4nbFMUZPsNrI0pFCf_nV37O3NY-7yVRN/s320/Dad+taking+down+temp+wall.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298823159928406354" border="0" /></a>Dad pulling apart the temp wall.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0wY0noiVb77WUo9Eo9Tybec39cQlCoW2QFsFEutknUSU14zJngxpF8lAQTXcgF67CTglRZefYyHZS6uI1giTDuLJ1BO9ou19ycs66563Xk5GH1DjeILczl2m8_mGa9_2AXmprI2Bwl_ds/s1600-h/should+we+take+this+down.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0wY0noiVb77WUo9Eo9Tybec39cQlCoW2QFsFEutknUSU14zJngxpF8lAQTXcgF67CTglRZefYyHZS6uI1giTDuLJ1BO9ou19ycs66563Xk5GH1DjeILczl2m8_mGa9_2AXmprI2Bwl_ds/s320/should+we+take+this+down.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298822835690729474" border="0" /></a>Rather ominous at night...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHuYmi4gZeZFk3BsaAjIWi3Eean1cl3vPJq-pBXYXcTNtgskFq_oHgVbEvXKLEwFeugFbb-T1hUW0gxK_mcyVmWbH67nvkrsHc5rM_tmv5Os30AmUSijYXF1xe-JlC1m3FbGLlNetnVVb/s1600-h/New+Beam%21.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHuYmi4gZeZFk3BsaAjIWi3Eean1cl3vPJq-pBXYXcTNtgskFq_oHgVbEvXKLEwFeugFbb-T1hUW0gxK_mcyVmWbH67nvkrsHc5rM_tmv5Os30AmUSijYXF1xe-JlC1m3FbGLlNetnVVb/s320/New+Beam%21.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298822512443525442" border="0" /></a><br />But in the morning...<br /><br />A new (and quite straight) header. They look incredible. We chose the stain and finish colors for both the cabinets and the floor. Can you imagine lifting sheets of 5/8" drywall over your head to screw them to a 9 foot ceiling? <br /><br />I can.<br /><br />And I am REALLY glad I didn't have to do it. <br /><br />I rented this panel lift and in a few hours had all the drywall fastened to the ceiling in the kitchen. By myself!<br /><br />The best part is that the kitchen is really starting to take shape (literally). It is hard to imagine a space when you can see through the 2x4 framed walls and ceiling. When it all gets covered you can see it actually <span style="font-style: italic;">being</span> a kitchen (imagine that...).<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQSHdR25eflaC6jTbHkMcwUMXUK-A4YYH7gxy3I4OaXocICNZocp0QYWdBHVFQod7amCFRs3veKZTIQbtrhQSbKrMyx16lO3lVtDjEw3M2vg5XjXajD5umSGVCYXKrfPIGha-jp4z61fsM/s1600-h/dining+room+getting+drywall.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQSHdR25eflaC6jTbHkMcwUMXUK-A4YYH7gxy3I4OaXocICNZocp0QYWdBHVFQod7amCFRs3veKZTIQbtrhQSbKrMyx16lO3lVtDjEw3M2vg5XjXajD5umSGVCYXKrfPIGha-jp4z61fsM/s320/dining+room+getting+drywall.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291028345065389522" border="0" /></a>The dining room buffet wall getting covered<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje141GvO80F0CdtrILwI2wj5PpIsZ5pg3HZsN_HGWZaypxdHmprIQTTx-jcmyiPYVRPYdfJFHBUkMDOpolbg9S9kqAwE-6ZjBz-GXaWYBVaiAfxIA0k7e-OKq4oy4eSv4dy3LKL4z6XCUZ/s1600-h/buffet+with+drywall.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje141GvO80F0CdtrILwI2wj5PpIsZ5pg3HZsN_HGWZaypxdHmprIQTTx-jcmyiPYVRPYdfJFHBUkMDOpolbg9S9kqAwE-6ZjBz-GXaWYBVaiAfxIA0k7e-OKq4oy4eSv4dy3LKL4z6XCUZ/s320/buffet+with+drywall.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291028053401725058" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgha09nqA5v2O011lCgADg9dsIX2bD_iRU2Png4qtRkibOaKJ1K6v7oCo2WWTxVbTIKx31Nykmt5aBSXeYzwHV1s1j0uOAUQr9FxUmYYpNXa1biCZQ-FuTr3TvM1mVHtELAuaDNH7PQli0X/s1600-h/drywall+on+kithen+ceiling.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgha09nqA5v2O011lCgADg9dsIX2bD_iRU2Png4qtRkibOaKJ1K6v7oCo2WWTxVbTIKx31Nykmt5aBSXeYzwHV1s1j0uOAUQr9FxUmYYpNXa1biCZQ-FuTr3TvM1mVHtELAuaDNH7PQli0X/s320/drywall+on+kithen+ceiling.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291027268306973858" border="0" /></a>Just needs a 'little' tape and mud...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgquGyTRPHqno5XbtZ7ka6j9cWif1M_Gy15TBHSnsyv-jyGWQcCAS-kkaPqhagnRg3ECCBb0pLqV8hxcr2aPPBbAdI304YZa7X3vqYiA-P4fc7GSi2SPI95w7KQIN_czRp4OjZ8hbcTXT7e/s1600-h/drywall+around+recessed++lights+.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgquGyTRPHqno5XbtZ7ka6j9cWif1M_Gy15TBHSnsyv-jyGWQcCAS-kkaPqhagnRg3ECCBb0pLqV8hxcr2aPPBbAdI304YZa7X3vqYiA-P4fc7GSi2SPI95w7KQIN_czRp4OjZ8hbcTXT7e/s320/drywall+around+recessed++lights+.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291021085523877362" border="0" /></a>Recessed lights will be above the counters and work spaces.Casey and Liesl Deckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01336734816762915580noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498153830027023721.post-29337365156453880582009-01-05T21:22:00.000-08:002009-01-05T21:30:52.399-08:00The family visiting the house during the holidays<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTtdtXVgIgomXNMT9L5PNZ5L_tOE4EsAd31q1vNkmpq3O_uMU499VcmCwaVMUI6lJ2IEB35MiIwCO6DK1sDcLRvF-VZ-vy2XagJdJt704cCdJQWpY9-J6jWWnTruseFKh10D2WPbRAjL7/s1600-h/The+Fam+at+new+house.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTtdtXVgIgomXNMT9L5PNZ5L_tOE4EsAd31q1vNkmpq3O_uMU499VcmCwaVMUI6lJ2IEB35MiIwCO6DK1sDcLRvF-VZ-vy2XagJdJt704cCdJQWpY9-J6jWWnTruseFKh10D2WPbRAjL7/s320/The+Fam+at+new+house.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288047364668108866" border="0" /></a>Alistair, Liesl, Orion, Larry, Sally, Casey, Kyle, Susan, and Brian (Liz taking the pic). The flu hit right about Christmas so I had to lay low for a few days before getting back to it. My goal was to get as far as possible on replacing the plumbing and hang dry wall in the kitchen.<br /><br />Well thanks to 'Arctic Blast 2008' the electrical work was pushed back 2 weeks and we hadn't passed our inspection to be able to cover the wires... so the was no dry wall hanging.<br /><br />I got some great help from my buddies Forrest and Ben during the middle of the week and they helped skim coat and paint the bed room ceilings. Liesl bought the bed room paint and as soon as it is up the bed rooms are done! We also worked on smoothing out the living room ceiling and prepping the box beams for primer.<br /><br />By the middle of my week off I finally hit stride and made nice progress each day.Casey and Liesl Deckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01336734816762915580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498153830027023721.post-31319387659569260462008-12-30T15:38:00.000-08:002008-12-30T16:26:55.614-08:00After Christmas... before New Year...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgToyfVlqisGWV990ZQViE4T94KEhrnTTVekYvwqOFQ0bDz6mDN9lfXPGHfewc4uiIEgIqKTLaf8k994mabE888H_1jan4l9sXrKq8Jl1Kvn_oY4_AsR25ncvQgR5skL4bFINOEr1HkE5ZT/s1600-h/LR-DR+sw.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgToyfVlqisGWV990ZQViE4T94KEhrnTTVekYvwqOFQ0bDz6mDN9lfXPGHfewc4uiIEgIqKTLaf8k994mabE888H_1jan4l9sXrKq8Jl1Kvn_oY4_AsR25ncvQgR5skL4bFINOEr1HkE5ZT/s320/LR-DR+sw.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285736532882098482" border="0" /></a>This is a view into the dining room from the living room. The far wall has an alcove with a leaded glass window and was covered with 70's paneling when we bought the place. This space has provided much inspiration through the beginning of our work on the house. It was (and will be again!) a built-in buffet on the side of the dining room. In the attic found the original 7 'beveled mirror that hung horizontally above the buffet top...<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrXHbuB3LQK6Ka26clTNUwrubkRH4dEnYDthnRwrvv_SfbBNXkaqS64bvd0h0Ffie_tOYC4zu5s7qzlR47UIgcBfsVgPBtWU9ju4cMxB71R4zB5kEN1oBTBoHinyohlBOBMaHH5N4r3TGG/s1600-h/LR+North.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrXHbuB3LQK6Ka26clTNUwrubkRH4dEnYDthnRwrvv_SfbBNXkaqS64bvd0h0Ffie_tOYC4zu5s7qzlR47UIgcBfsVgPBtWU9ju4cMxB71R4zB5kEN1oBTBoHinyohlBOBMaHH5N4r3TGG/s320/LR+North.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285736319986289874" border="0" /></a>The first thing I saw when I walked in this house that made me want it was the box beam ceilings. As you can see they are in the living room and dining room. This week we have been working on cleaning them up and prepping for paint. As in the bed rooms there was thick layer of 'decorative texture' that had to be scraped off the ceiling between the beams.<br /><br />The opening on the far wall is where the french doors (the originals were in the basement!) will be hung again. Thanks to Liz Deck's under-the-floor trim detective work we discovered there was once an opening wide enough for two doors side by side. A few swipes with a Sawzall opened up to find the double header in place and an incredible flow from the box beam ceiling, to the doors, to the back room.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzT5KjLzAlkZdCTRu8i677Y4T-ZhgDO_11Yy2T00K-9_8HwuOh1pzk4CugW1UzqgclI2IGhkLil05OFxPySzZQ7IabYcLODczwR5zTw_OvdY_XD48NbvGJYpCMb2iU4vvOAnuwCQC6TptY/s1600-h/kitchen+north.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzT5KjLzAlkZdCTRu8i677Y4T-ZhgDO_11Yy2T00K-9_8HwuOh1pzk4CugW1UzqgclI2IGhkLil05OFxPySzZQ7IabYcLODczwR5zTw_OvdY_XD48NbvGJYpCMb2iU4vvOAnuwCQC6TptY/s320/kitchen+north.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285733658557573266" border="0" /></a>Our great friend Britt Kummer has helped us come up with a fantastic use of space in the kitchen! The back of the kitchen leads upstairs and is slated to be home to the fridge (right), pantry (left behind small wall), and more counter space (left foreground). Where the window is on the left used to be a half bath, then it became a laundry room... and now we are happy to have the natural light in the back of the kitchen.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8gsZYg-lKD6Hrq5SF2ylInPKttiuE2shxuYulV_ncfwWaNNDeTK-KHytUCNUptsKW_WAJ_LbNb7aqd7oVl4d4-rFYc8eoQhP9NyGnv6HC59jThful8-iwTBhH6Y7emo8Is8GxoLA3hNOH/s1600-h/Kitchen++to+DR+with+Al.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8gsZYg-lKD6Hrq5SF2ylInPKttiuE2shxuYulV_ncfwWaNNDeTK-KHytUCNUptsKW_WAJ_LbNb7aqd7oVl4d4-rFYc8eoQhP9NyGnv6HC59jThful8-iwTBhH6Y7emo8Is8GxoLA3hNOH/s320/Kitchen++to+DR+with+Al.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285731927278684754" border="0" /></a>This is a view of the kitchen looking toward the dining room. At this point the electrical is almost all the way roughed in and you can see we are ready to put some insulation up in those exterior walls (though it would have been nice if that happened before Arctic Blast 2008!). A 'three' bedroom, one bath with an unfinished basement and all kinds of potential.<br /><br /> As we have learned it was the first house built on the block on Couch Street. A unique bungalow built in 1913 with <span style="font-style: italic;">only</span> two (yes... unbelievable) previous owners.<br /><br />We knew right away that we owed the house a lot of our time and that we had to do it justice with the renovation.<br /><br />Part of the deal in buying the house was that it came with the 'personal property in it... aka LOTS of junk. Closing happened quickly and we had to make plans to get it cleaned out so we could get down to the business of fixing it up. The house had good bones but needed a fairly substantial make over. The kitchen was a full tear out, but the rest of the house really just needed fresh surfaces.<br /><br />We didn't waste any time and the day after closing we got straight to work. LD and I had vacation plans to go to Mexico the week before Thanksgiving but somehow decided pulling out stinky carpet would be more fun than white sandy beaches (sigh). <br /><br />Three 30yd dumpsters, an army of wonderful friends (fueled on pizza and beer), and 3 days later we cleaned out the whole house. My buddy Eric and I gutted the kitchen down to the studs, and then a little further. We had folks sweeping out dust from the 50's in the basement, priming bedroom walls, and doing laps to Goodwill in their cars.<br /><br />And we thought we would be in 'put it back together mode' in short order...Casey and Liesl Deckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01336734816762915580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2498153830027023721.post-86852270134420658202008-12-29T11:47:00.000-08:002008-12-29T12:00:00.307-08:00LiftoffThe first entry into the journey of fixing up or 1913 bungalow in Laurelhurst Portland Oregon...<br /><br />I have start this a story a little while after it really began: In the madness of house shopping, selling and buying we (uh... I) lost our camera. <br /><br />So many of the first days of work were not captured by us. Fortunately friends and family came over to help work and took some shots that I am hopin we get. After a month of denial I coughed up for a new camera, and we have are now in business!Casey and Liesl Deckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01336734816762915580noreply@blogger.com1
